After the Juventus defeat at Udinese, I asked the club’s technical director, Roberto Di Stefano, to explain what made the defeat so disappointing.
“The reason for our failure was the lack of belief,” Di Stefane said.
“We were not ready.
I think the first mistake was to lose the ball on the break.
I don’t think we knew how good the players were and the quality of the players.”
The second mistake was that we were in no shape to score.
We played with our backs to goal, so we couldn’t defend and we had no rhythm, and we conceded the first goal because we didn’t take care of the ball.
“We were in a difficult situation and we lost the game by one goal.
It’s not easy to say, but I think we could have scored more.
I would like to say we should have scored three goals, but we could’ve done more.
We did nothing wrong.”
Di Stefano added that it was a very difficult season for the players.
“It’s not good enough to be the champions,” he said.
“It’s difficult to get into the top four.
We lost the last three games, we lost at home to Napoli, so it’s not a good team.
We’ve got the talent but the quality is not there.
I know the fans want a winner, but the results have been bad.
The next game is important because if we lose that game, we’re probably not going to qualify for the Champions League.
It’s very difficult, but it’s better than nothing.”
The Nerazzurri were unable to score a goal in their first four Serie A games, but Di Stefani was satisfied with the team’s form.
Juventus have had a difficult start to the season, losing three of their opening five games and having only one win from their first nine league matches.
“It was difficult for everyone,” Di Stasio said.
Di Stefane, who was appointed technical director in January, has previously said that he has given his team “a bit of a chance” to improve their play.
As part of his pre-match warm-up, Di Stefana said that the Bianconeri will be playing the first leg of the Champions’ League semi-final against Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico.
“[Fiorentini] have a good reputation and are a very well-organised team, but this team, they can make mistakes,” DiStefano said.
“They know how to play in a defensive sense, but they can be too quick in attack.
They’re very dangerous.”
